The Geometric Period is named for the linear all-over style featured on this vase. In later examples, vase painters also included schematically rendered human and animal figures, like the chariot scene across the belly. These processions may refer to funeral games or a funerary procession honoring the deceased, or to the mythical age of heroes described in the poems of Homer.

Monumental vases like this served as grave markers for prominent Athenians and indicate increased social stratification during the Geometric Period.
