Here, the presence of the trough makes clear that Barye observed the bear at the zoo. Barye presented the original cast of this bronze to the wife of Duc d’Orléans, his royal patron. Barye chose not to produce other casts of this sculpture during his lifetime so that her gift would always be unique. However, Barbédienne produced this popular model starting in 1877.
