The archer on this Persian coin is thought to represent the Great King, ruler of the Achaemenid Empire. The Achaemenid empire was established in 550 BC by Cyrus the Great and frequently came into conflict with the Greeks, most notably in the Persian wars chronicled by the Greek historian Herodotos. The last Achaemenid ruler, Darius III, was overthrown in 330 BC.
