Artists working for the ambitious dukes of Burgundy created a monumental and realistic style of sculpture, now known as “Burgundian,” whose influence spread far beyond the borders of that province. The spiritual authority of the bishop’s office is strikingly captured in this ornately garbed figure, which raises its hand in benediction.
