This marine painting depicts the port of Le Légué, near Saint-Brieuc, located one mile from the sea on the northwest coast of France. Because his father was a mariner in this area, Boudin developed an appreciation for the coast’s atmospheric effects at an early age. He felt that an artist could capture nature on canvas only if he worked outdoors. He once stated, “Three strokes of the brush in front of nature are worth more than two days at the easel.”
