Huntsman Blowing His Horn (Primary Title)

This sketch of a huntsman on a horse has been identified as copy of a figure from Carle Vernet’s Deer Hunt on Saint-Hubert’s Day in 1818. Degas made three copies from this painting—two drawings and a watercolor—demonstrating his interests in Vernet as a forerunner in the equestrian tradition and in the courtly elegance of the early 19th Century, also epitomized by Vernet.
