Studies of Horses with a Sketch of a Hand (Primary Title)
Eugène Delacroix, French, 1798 - 1863 (Artist)
Delacroix sketched regularly from both the model and his imagination, in pencil as well as in oils. Many of these artworks, including these realistic studies after a common workhorse and the fist of driver, were discovered in his studio after his death and sold at the legendary auction of the contents of his studio after the auctioneers stamped with the artist’s initials. Such seemingly casual studies were yet necessary to Delacroix’s way of working, which involved the close study of nature, though they were not necessarily preliminary to any specific painting.
