Fragment from a Pictorial Embroidery (Primary Title)
Unknown (Artist)
This richly figured embroidery is a fragment from a long strip that decorated the raised outer edges of a royal dais (gaddi). Portions of two scenes showing the pleasures and pastimes of Indian court life are depicted in conventions that strongly echo 18th- and 19th-centruy paintings from Jaipur. To the left, hunters on horseback, on foot, and astride an elephant pursue lions through rocky terrain. To the right, elegantly costumed court ladies stroll through the grounds of a Rajasthani palace.
