Japanese genre painting and ukiyo-e drew from a wide range of sources, including classical literature. The subject of this painting, Ariwara no Narihira (825–880), is one of the thirty-six immortal poets. Thirty of his poems are included in the 10th-century anthology titled Collection of Japanese Poems of Ancient and Modern Times (Kokin Wakashu). Best known for his romantic exploits, Narihira was a popular figure in art and a fitting subject for the “floating world.”
