Earthenware ceramics such as this example emphatically sought to deviate from their more expensive porcelain counterparts, especially notable in both the highly keyed yellow color as well as the overtly political subject matter transferred to its surface. Valuable porcelain wares such as made at Sèvres were glazed in soft colors, formed into extravagant shapes, and individually painted, usually with lighthearted themes.
