After studying under Fu Baoshi in Zhongqing during World War II, Yang Xialin spent most of his life in Fujian Province, teaching and painting. However, his early stay in Zhongqing by the Yangtze River always drew his painting back to this subject. Using dark and dry ink, Yang depicts the heavy foliage on the cliffs of the riverbank, and illustrates how a 350-mile journey from Baidi to Jiangling was accomplished in only one day by boat, as described in Li Bai’s 8th-century poem about the strong current of the river.
