Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road (Series Title)
東海道五十三次之內 庄野 白雨 (Primary Title)
Utagawa Hiroshige 歌川広重, Japanese, 1797 - 1858 (Artist)
In one of the quintessential images of the series, Hiroshige explores the theme of humanity at the mercy of an unpredictable nature. A sudden rainstorm has sent travelers fleeing for cover, clutching their straw raincoats and umbrellas. The passenger carried in the covered palanquin keeps dry as the surrounding treetops bend in the harsh torrents of rain, represented by hundreds of thin incisions in the woodblock.
