The journey ends in Kyoto, the historic former capital of Japan. An array of travelers cross the long bridge over the Kamo River, and colorful rooftops and Buddhist temples dot the sides of Mount Hiei and Higashiyama Hill in the distance. Comparisons between Edo and Kyoto often evoked notions of the new versus the old, and this decidedly less hurried depiction of urban life in Kyoto shows perhaps a reverence for the latter.
