Sun Yi’s preference for botanical subjects is fully illustrated in this garden scene depicting magpies amid seasonal flowers such as hydrangeas, camellias, and peonies. The intricate fine lines and lavish colors define every miniscule detail. Sun Yi spent most of his life in Fuzhou on China’s Fujian coast, where he introduced his works to Japan through his students from the court of the Ryukyu Kingdom islands. Alongside the Ryukyu-School of painting created by these court artists, Sun greatly influenced 18th-century Japanese painting.
