A businessman and devoted Buddhist, Wang Zhen was a modern Chinese painter of the Shanghai-school style. The exaggerated form, bold brush washes, and bright color in these two paintings by Wang Zhen are characteristic of the Shanghai school. The Shanghai style marked the major departure from traditionalist Chinese painting by focusing less on symbolism and more on spontaneous and expressive appeal. Wang used his masterful calligraphic skills to inscribe and sign his paintings.
