Mastery of atmospheric perspective and composition defines this long view northward along the Ganges. The river’s bank describes a semicircle around its still waters, as utterly unembellished as the sky above. A long bamboo pole flying a flag that marks the location of a temple cuts through these zones of negative space, unifying the composition. Whether deeply incised in the foreground or lightly sketched in the distance, the expressiveness of Lumsden’s line is characteristic of his first two trips to India. Afterward, he favored working from preparatory sketches rather than drawing directly onto his waxed copper plates.
