Tribute to Spring (Primary Title)
Theresa Pollak, American, 1899 - 2002 (Artist)
Statement of Objective: That my painting shall be moving in form, vibrantly alive, expressive of myself and of the age in which I live. —Theresa Pollak
Born in Richmond in 1899, Pollak had a long and illustrious career as an artist, art teacher, and arts administrator. She founded the School of Art at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1928, when it was known as Richmond Professional Institute, and devoted forty years to its development. Pollak painted Tribute to Spring the year after she studied with Hans Hoffman in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The experience was pivotal in the development of her mature style, which synthesized figuration and abstraction. Although Tribute to Spring depicts no specific location, it captures the essence of the season through its lyrical, symphonic composition of pastel colors
