Overlooking the vast waters of Hiroshima Bay stands the Itsukushima Shrine, built on the picturesque Miyajima Island by a wealthy lord in the 6th century. In this print, Hasui depicts the enormous red gate, constructed in 1168, known as torii, marking the entrance to the Shinto shrine. The print captures a moment at high tide in winter, when the tori appears to float in the water, 650 feet from the coastline. During the Heian period (794–1185), the Itsukushima Shrine attracted many aristocrats from Kyoto, 250 miles east of the island. In his 1643 book Nihon Kokujisekikou, Japanese Confucian scholar Hayashi Shunsai (1618–1680) ranked Itsukushima as one of the three most beautiful sites in Japan.
