One of the Eight Immortals in Daoist legend, Magu is illustrated here carrying peaches in one hand and in the basket on her back, along with a gourd, both symbols of eternal life. The artist indicated in the inscription that he created this painting in the style of Li Longmian (1049-1106), a Song dynasty master known for his religious figurative depictions with an emphasis on the expression of inner feelings.
