Originally used as a stationery container, this rectangular box provides an excellent example of 17th-century craftsmanship using inlaid lacquer, which on this container’s lid depicts a hillside pavilion overlooking a lively street scene of people engaged in various activities. Innumerable, shimmering pieces of mother-of-pearl form mythological animals, pine trees, bamboo, and plum blossoms. Intricate geometric designs of plants and animals decorate the sides of the container and its accompanying stand.
