This plate depicting iridescent violet and purple bats in flight was made by Clément Massier, a French ceramist known for his glazed lusterware. Lucian Lévy-Dhurmer, who late became an important Symbolist painter, served as artistic director of the Massier studio between 1880 and 1895, and it was he who perfected the experiments that led to the use of luster glazes. The plate was designed by Lévy-Dhurmer and made at Golfe-Juan, near Cannes, France.
Signed on reverse in gold glaze: "Clement Massier / Golfe. Juan A.M. / L. Levy"
