Quarry of Diana (Primary Title)
Lucio Pozzi, American, born 1935 (Artist)
Fifty Works for Fifty States: In 2008, in a unique partnership with the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Vogels distributed twenty-five hundred works across the country, giving fifty works to one art museum in each of the fifty states. This exhibition, The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States, showcases the fifty works VMFA received as part of that initiative, which bears the same title. As a diverse and rich body of work, the Vogels' generous giftattests to their passion and commitment to sharing contemporary art with the public.
Lucio Pozzi Born in Milan, Italy, Pozzi came to the United States in the early 1960s. Although he had some early associations with Conceptual and Minimalist artists, he explores a variety of approaches in his work and strongly resists being labeled by a singular style. Instead, he considers each of his pieces the result of “irrepeatable [sic] situations, each time, each moment different.” The selection on display here provides a sense of his broad interests, from his quickly executed monochromatic plywood construction to his gestural still life of a bouquet of flowers in a vivid palette. The Vogels met Pozzi in New York in the early 1970s, and as their collection of Pozzi works illustrates, they enjoyed the adventure of following his many artistic paths.
Some object records are not complete and do not reflect VMFA's full and current knowledge. VMFA makes routine updates as records are reviewed and enhanced.
