Inspired by displays of art pottery at the 1904 Saint Louis World’s Fair, Walter Stephen established his first kiln near Memphis, Tennessee, before moving to North Carolina in 1910. He opened the Pisgah Forest Pottery near Asheville in 1926. Using forms derived from Asian ceramics and the Arts and Crafts movement, Stephen experimented with inventive glazes and techniques. Three are particularly characteristics of his work: Asian-style glazes, crystalline glazes (seen here), and cameo ware.
