This sculpture of King Charles VII (reigned 1422-61) would have evoked mixed emotions in 19th century French viewers. Although he won Normandy from the English and thus secured the boundaries of France, he left the heroine Joan of Arc to die at their hands. This is Barye’s most successful attempt at the Neo-Gothic style, one of the Historicist styles current in the 19th century.
