This desk belongs to a group of furniture ascribed to the “WH” cabinetmaker, so-called for the calligraphic “WH” monograms that appear as decorative features on a handful of works. The furniture by this craftsman shares distinct construction features that suggest the maker was trained in Europe. Although there is no documentation to link the group to specific artisan, all the pieces are thought to have been produced in northeastern North Carolina. This desk descended in the Daniel family of Halifax County, North Carolina.
