Tray with Lotus Design (Translation)
剔犀荷花紋小盤 元至明 (Primary Title)
Unknown (Artist)
Lacquerware has been desirable since ancient times because of its durable surface, which is resistant to water, heat, and abrasion. Coated with alternating black and red lacquer and then carved, this small tray presents the lotus in three stages:budding, blooming, and fully bloomed. With its naturalistic representation and sophisticated carving, it is one of the finest existing examples of two-color carved lacquer produced in the 14th century.
