Shaped like chrysanthemum petals, this lacquerware plate is associated in form and design with the monochrome ceramics produced by the imperial court of the preceding Ming dynasty (1368-1644). It conveys the Qing royal preference for elegance and simplicity. The interior of the dish is incised with a poem by Emperor Qianlong, who praised the skill and talent of craftspeople in Suzhou, the center for lacquerware where this dish was made.

Interior: 吳下髹工巧莫比，仿為或比舊還過。脫胎那用木和錫，成器奚勞琢與磨。博士品同謝青喻，仙人顏似暈朱酡。事宜師古寧斯謂，擬欲摛吟愧即多。乾隆甲午御題 (incised and filled in gold with Emperor Qianlong’s poem 《詠仿永樂朱漆菊花盤》, and dated to the Jiawu year (1774) of Qianlong reign). Underbase：大清乾隆仿古 (Made in the Great Qing dynasty after the archaic style), incised and filled with gold on underside of base.
