Troubetzkoy, who excelled at small scale sculptures such as this horse, rendered in a fully tactile manner, enjoyed an international career, working in Italy, Russia, France and the United States.  Here, Troubetzkoy’s formal exercise tests the expressive possibilities of the bronze medium, challenging existing 19th-century representational conventions.
