Funerary Vase (Primary Title)
Funerary Vessel (Alternate Title)
Unknown (Artist)
Artifacts found in Niger and Burkina Faso since the 1980s reveal an extensive pottery-making tradition. Terracotta vessels from burial sites in the Bura-Asinda-Sikka region are usually cylindrical, like this example. These recent discoveries are difficult to interpret until further studies offer more information about how these unusual vessels were used. The surface of this vase features images of metal weapons and jewelry along with distinctive geometric patterns formed by rows of raised points.
