This rare painting, signed and dated, depicts the central deity Sakra Devanam Indra, the ruler of the Buddhist universe. He is wearing his sun-and-moon crown while surrounded by celestial guardians. The inscription identifies the patrons who commissioned this painting in 1740 for the Dogapsa Temple at Mount Wolchul in South Korea. In the 15th century, the Dogapsa flourished with the patronage of the Joseon court, housing more than 700 monks. Paintings such as this were originally mounted as a scroll and hung on the wall for worship and teaching. This painting was remounted in 2015 with a conservation grant provided by the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, South Korea.
