Lion Devouring a Doe (master model) (Primary Title)
Antoine-Louis Barye, French, 1796 - 1875 (Artist)
This master model was used to create the molds from which editions of Barye’s bronzes were made. The master model is distinguished by extremely careful attention to surface detail, as this had to be sufficient strength and crispness to translate into the mold. A join is visible behind the lion’s tail on the base, where several pieces of bronze have been fitted together to form the model. The seams from such joins would be smoothed out by hand on the final casts.
Incised rear left of base: "BARYE".
Stamped center front of base and rear right: "BARYE".
