Hunting Qualifications (Series Title)
Henry Thomas Alken, English, 1785–1851 (Artist)
Printed on front: "THE APPOINTMENT. / THIS should be seen in Leicestershire, where, without doubt, you / will find the greatest number of the Qualified collected together. There / is a certain stamp or marked character about these men by which they / may be distinguished, even by the cover-side. There is an ease of seat, / a satisfied expression of countenance, no bustle. The horse, however / high in mettle, appears to be influenced more by the rider's head than / hand. In fact, there is a something which I cannot describe with my pen, and of which I fear my pencil will convey but an imperfect idea. / [verse] With easy seat behold them ride-- / These are the truly qualified-- / Models of sporting men ; / Graceful andelegant, yet neat ; Egad, the very sight's a treat / I long to have again !"
Inscribed in graphite on verso: "HRH 20 / 21 / 1"
