Recto:"Study of A Horse" ("Etude de Cheval") Verso: "Study of Horses" ("Etude de Chevaux") (Primary Title)
Théodore Géricault, French, 1791 - 1824 (Artist)
This drawing of a horse, which appears to be a life study demonstrates the strong influence of the anatomical precision developed by the English artist George Stubbs, whose prints and paintings Géricault copied on numerous occasions. However, this horse also resembles sculptures from antiquity, such as the horses of the Dioscuri on Capitoline Hill and the Horse Tamers on Quirinal Hill, both located in Rome.
