Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road (Series Title)

Utagawa Hiroshige 歌川広重, Japanese, 1797 - 1858 (Artist)
Mitsuke is situated on the Tokaido’s middle stretch, about halfway between Edo and Kyoto. While some waters were shallow enough to wade across, others, like the Tenryu River shown here, required ferries or riverboats to provide travelers passage back and forth. Beached on a sandbar, two ferrymen watch as samurai, attendants, and horses continue across the river in another set of boats. Mist obscures the shoreline, but the tops of trees are visible in the distance.
