It’s real precision work; it’s like being a machinist. —Wendell Castle

Castle has been called the father of the art furniture movement. His work features organic, and sometimes whimsical, forms and a broad range of materials, including rare hardwoods, plastics, veneers, and metals. In the early 2000s, Castle turned to fiberglass after years working primarily with wood. He was able to harness advances in paint colors, finish, and mold-making technologies developed since his first use of plastics in the 1960s and ’70s. Blue Noon’s iridescence results from several coatings of automobilegrade “metal-flake” urethane, while the slick surface and eccentric shape—at once Pop, Surrealist, and Futuristic—reflects the refinement of his aesthetic during the intervening years.
