Kawase Hasui 川瀬巴水, Japanese, 1883 - 1957 (Artist)
Benten Pond is located in Tokyo’s Ueno Park on the former site of Kan’eiji, a Tendai Buddhist temple built in 1625. The pond is named after Benzaiten, a Buddhist goddess enshrined in a temple hall on an island in the pond. In July and August, Benten Pond, also known as Lotus Pond, is completely covered by a thick layer of what is known as the largest concentration of lotus in Tokyo.
