"My work is a blending of process and imagery. . . . There’s a lot to question: Is this shape solid? Is it space? What is it really about?"—Donald Sultan

Sultan often takes objects from nature—fruit, flowers, and vegetables—as the subjects for his monumental painting and drawings. His painting titled Lemons May 16 1984, on view nearby in the Lewis Galleries, offers a massive yet humble still life created from commercial building materials that include vinyl tile, plaster, and roofing tar. For Trumpet Series, based on the semitropical flowering vine, Sultan employs conventional materials but continues his use of inflated scale and simplified form to achieve his characteristic balance of abstraction and representation.
