A fine example of Korean folk art by artist Nam Jung-ye, this painting depicts in a warm color palette nine of the ten Korean longevity symbols, including the sun, clouds, water, rocks, pine trees, bamboo, fungus, turtles, and cranes. Mounted as a kite with bamboo ribs, the work refers to the Korean tradition when children fly kites at the beginning of the first lunar month, sometimes cutting the kites loose to carry away bad luck in the New Year. VMFA acquired this painting, along with Kim Chun-ok’s Nature-Relationship 0902 #1, at a joint exhibition of Korean and American artists held in Richmond in 2010.
