Marcel Coard studied architecture at the School of Fine Arts in Paris, where he later opened a gallery on the Boulevard Haussmann. A leading designer in the Art Deco period, he created furniture in the style of the day for special clients such as French fashion designer and prominent art collector Jacques Doucet. The rectilinear forms are hallmarks of Art Deco, and the simplicity of the suite’s decoration highlights its functionality-an idea promoted by Bauhaus theory. The suite was commissioned in June 1929 for the country residence of Paul Cocteau, brother of the celebrated author Jean Cocteau.
