BD Sunset Break (Primary Title)
Robert Yasuda, American, born 1940 (Artist)
"It reveals itself in its own time. It has a lot to do with perception and the notion of spending the time allowing not only the eyes to open retinally, but the mind to open to what you are experiencing."
—Robert Yasuda
Born in Hawaii, abstract painter Robert Yasuda moved to New York City in the late 1950s, where he attended the Pratt Institute. He began exhibiting his works in 1965 as part of a generation that pushed the boundaries of abstract painting by making works that bordered on sculptural objects. Here, Yasuda first carved the object out of wood and then painted it with layers of luminous colors. The intense contrast of the bright colors on the asymmetric shape produces a shifting sense of the work’s depth and relationship to the wall.
