Expand your creativity and artistic awareness, build your own portfolio for college, or simply spend time with peers and professional artists through these studio classes related to VMFA’s world-renowned collection. Enrollment is limited in order to provide individual instruction and accommodations for teenagers of all skill levels. Register online or by phone 804.340.1405.

Focus on your favorite style, medium, or technique in one or all of these innovative classes. Designed for teens in middle or high school, these classs help students grow creatively, explore self-expression, and develop works for a college portfolio.

[TW4] Design: Resin Crafting

Wednesdays, Dec 4 & 11, 5–7 pm (2 sessions) | Art Education Center, Studio 1

Ages 13–17 | Enjoy the art of resin making! Experiment with basic techniques, molds, and additives to make funky charms and other fun creations perfect for adding to your choice of a phone case or an art board.

[TW5] Digital Art: Intro to Photoshop

Wednesdays, Jan 22 & 29, 5–7 pm (2 sessions) | Pauley Center, Computer Lab

Ages 13–17 | Navigate through the world of digital art and design! Learn to use fundamental (and fun) tools in Adobe Photoshop to alter images and enhance your graphic design projects. Students are encouraged (but not required) to bring a USB flash drive for saving files.

[TW6] Cosplay: Creative Construction

Ages 13–17 | Turn everyday materials into epic cosplay creations! Learn to how to construct props and costume accessories using basic art supplies, recycled items, and found objects for more sustainable, budget-friendly designs that look anything but ordinary.

[TW7] Painting: Applications & Style

Ages 13–17 | Elevate your drawing and painting skills by exploring light, color, and application techniques for pastels and acrylic paints. Experiment with different art media and tools to create Impressionist style compositions.

[TW8] Digital: Photography Today

Wednesdays, Apr 9, 16, 23, 5–7 pm (3 sessions) | Pauley Center, Computer Lab

Ages 13–17 | Develop the ability to see, photograph, and edit successful images with any digital 
camera, from DSRLs to iPhones. Use a variety of editing tools and apps to enhance images 
and designs. DSLR cameras are available for use, but students are welcome to bring their own cameras and camera phones, as well as a USB flash drive for saving images.

[TW9] Mixed-Media: Art & Identity

Wednesdays, May 7 & 14, 5–7 pm (2 sessions) | Art Educational Center, Studio 1

Ages 13–17 | Discover Frida Kahlo’s artistic journey and embrace self-expression through art! Enjoy experimenting with mixed-media collage and painting with acrylics on canvas to create bold, expressive self-portraits that reflect personal identity and celebrate the creative process.

Ages 13–17 | Create dynamic drawings that interact with the environment! Use the VMFA sculpture garden (weather permitting) as your inspiration, crafting site-specific art that transforms spaces and 
engages viewers in unexpected ways.

[TS4] Painting: Mini Pet Portraits

Ages 13–17 | Unleash your creativity and capture the charm of your favorite animal! Learn how to paint pet portraits on small-scale canvases that capture each pet’s unique features and character. Students are encouraged to bring printed photographs of their pets or favorite animals. Students will also need to bring a bag lunch from home; no peanut products, please.

[TS5] Embroidery: Basics & Beyond

Ages 13–17 | Thread your way through the basics of embroidery! Practice fundamental stitches 
for hand embroidery, then experiment with added embellishments to create dynamic designs that blend tradition with contemporary style. Students should bring a nut-product-free lunch from home.

make drawings from observation more engaging and unique. Think outside the box while practicing drawing fundamentals like composition, texture, and value.

Ages 13–17 | Step into the world of digital fashion! Learn to use Adobe Illustrator and other web-based tools to create your own clothing designs. Plan mood boards, sketch ideas, and design stylish digital illustrations.
