Children of Pomfret at the Entrance to the Incline Shaft (Primary Title)
David Goldblatt, South African, 1930 - 2018 (Artist)
"I must proceed on the assumption that photographs do make a difference." —David Goldblatt
His post-apartheid work has continued to focus on social and cultural issues such as the AIDS epidemic, pervasive poverty, and environmental damage brought about by industrial development. Frequently his extended titles, paired with his powerful images, tell an entire story, as is the case with this work: Children of Pomfret at the entrance to the incline shaft and underground pool of water in which they swim, Pomfret Blue Asbestos Mine, which closed in 1986, North West Province. 20 December, 2002.
