This icon was presented by officers of the Preobrazhensky Regiment to Grand Duke Sergei, uncle of Tsar Nicholas II, and Grand Duchess Elizabeth, sister of the future Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. The word preobrazhensky means transfiguration.
Maker's mark K.A., dated 1884, assay mark of St. Petersburg before 1899, 84 zolotnik
The back has an engraved inscription within a laurel crown.; "Blessing of the Preobrazhenskii Regiment. June 3rd, 1884. A new commandment I give unto you the ye love one another as I loved you. (St. John, Chapter 13, Verse 34)". Also inscribed are the very numerous signatures of the members of the regiment including General Major Obolenskii, Count von Pfeil, Coubt Murav'ev, and Count Loris Melikov.
