In the center of this medallion, Christ appears on the cross flanked by two crucified criminals. Mary Magdalene, identified by her alabaster jar, mourns at his feet, and the Virgin Mary and John stand to Christ's right. The rest of the surface is carved with Roman soldiers and many other mourners. In the distance, domed buildings, often associated with Eastern architecture, suggest the "Oriental" skyline of Jerusalem. Mother-of-pearl carvings often decorated ecclesiastical objects such as monstrances.
