Produced in Shiga prefecture, Shigaraki wares were initially made as daily utensils before being adapted for use at tea ceremonies in the 15th century. The rustic appearance of Shigaraki ware appealed to tea masters who believed these vessels reflected the style of wabi, a type of tea ceremony that emphasizes imperfection, asymmetry, austerity, and simplicity.
