Rectangular Box with People in Landscape (Primary Title)
明 香色漆鑲螺鈿樓閣圖長方蓋盒 (Translation)
Unknown (Artist)
Representing the remarkable Chinese lacquer craftsmanship of the 17th century, this rectangular box, which was used as a container for stationery, is an excellent example of inlaid lacquer produced in the early Qing dynasty. The scene on the cover depicts a pavilion set on a hillside overlooking a street where people are engaged in various activities. Innumerable pieces of shimmering mother-of-pearl form mythological animals, pine trees, bamboo, and plum blossoms.
