This bowl exemplifies inlaid celadon ware produced in the 12th century. In this technique, the design was first carved into the clay body and then fired for the first time. The potter then filled in the grooves with white and black slip, a mixture of clay and water, before the vessel was fired for the second time. Finally a translucent bluish-green glaze was applied before the third firing. Known for its elegant form, innovative inlay, and translucent glaze, Korean inlaid celadon is one of the great achievements in Korean ceramic history.
