Following the Portuguese landing at Nagasaki in the mid-16th century, a large number of Jesuit missionaries and European merchants arrived on Kyushu and the Ryukyu islands. Made for the European market, this container is decorated with inlaid and maki-e designs of flowers, oranges, and maples. Maki-e is a painting technique in which metal powders such as gold, silver, and copper are applied to lacquer to create various colors and textures.
