This globular jar sits on a pedestal and exemplifies the connection between early Japanese and early Korean stoneware. Many examples with footed bases or high pedestals have been found in tombs along the southern and southwestern coasts of Japan’s islands.
The name sue, which means offering, was given in the 1950s by Japanese scholars who believed that this type of stoneware was used for holding food as offerings to ancestors or the deceased during ceremonial practices.
