The Peony Garden (Primary Title)
Daniel Putnam Brinley, American, 1879 - 1963 (Artist)
Daniel Putnam Brinley studied at New York’s Art Students League with the experimental American impressionist John Twachtman before moving to Paris in the early years of the last century. There he associated with more avant-garde figures, such asJohn Marin, Edouard Steichen, and Max Weber, developing a distinctive style indebted to post-impressionism and fauvism. Brinley would go on to exhibit at Alfred Stieglitz’s progressive Little Galleries on his return from Europe. These art-world connections also led to Brinley’s participation in the landmark 1913 Armory Show, which introduced modern art to a broad American audience. In addition to serving on the exhibition’s domestic, publicity, and reception committees, Brinley showed three works, including this vibrant landscape.
